With Les Enfants Rouges, I wanted to explore innocence confronted by a world that resists simple moral certainty. Through the experiences of children navigating an austere rural landscape, I examined how violence, faith, and imagination quietly shape the passage into adulthood. I embraced a restrained style, allowing silence, faces, and the surrounding environment to carry emotional weight. Rather than explaining the characters' inner lives, I wanted their gestures and encounters to reveal the tension between purity and experience. Ultimately, the film suggests that childhood is not a refuge from the world's contradictions, but the place where they are first discovered and deeply felt.
